Jean-Auguste- Dominique Ingres Apotheosis of Homer 1827 Oil on canvas
Figure 30-7 JEAN-AUGUSTE-DOMINIQUE INGRES, Apotheosis of Homer, 1827. Oil on canvas, 12’ 8” x 16’ 10 3/4”. Louvre, Paris. • 12’ x 16’ in size, Ingres’s painting was inspired by Raphael’s, School of Athens (fig. 22-9), Ingres’s favorite painter. This monumental canvas is a Neoclassical celebration of the humanistic disciplines of philosophy, poetry, music and art; depicted are Homer and Vergil, Dante, Raphael, Plato and Socrates, 2 statuesque women personifying the Iliad and the Odyssey, Shakespeare, Poussin, French writers-Racine, Moliere, and Voltaire. • Ingres also studied under David but left his studio early over style issues where Ingres believed in purer Greek style than David; Ingres used flat and linear forms similar to those found in Greek vase painting (ch. 5); often Ingres placed the figure in the foreground like a low-relief sculpture. 3
