  2. A s s i m i l a t i n g • Making banitsa • Riding lessons • Thanksgiving with Bulgarians • Socializing with English faculty • Community events with neighbors

  3. Teaching at Nikola Y. Vaptsarov • Sample lessons: • 10th Grade: Occupy Wall Street • 11th Grade: Acting out scenes from Romeo and Juliet • 12th Grade: Comparing Tupac’s Thugz Don’t Cry and T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

  4. Language Cafes • Help students converse freely in English- so they have real life experience. • Most of my classes are 14 to 16 kids, so I invite the whole group in the afternoon. Since they’re older, they can hold conversations in English on a wide range of topics. • Spending time outside of an academic setting has motivated my students to try harder in class.

  5. Project Ideas • Take on classes at the University of Shumen • English language newspaper at my high school • Interview various members of two or more religious congregations in Shumen and analyze how they identify themselves in relation to congregations of other faiths in the city.
