  2. The Effect of Light Power On The Evaporation Rate of Coffee

  3. Purpose • To measure the effect of additional energy from a light source on evaporation of coffee

  4. Hypothesis: • If a bulb of greater power is used to warm coffee, then more of the coffee will evaporate.

  5. Evaporation Energy • Evaporation is a change of phase from liquid to gas • Because the higher energy molecules leave, the process removes energy from the liquid

  6. Evaporation Energy • Light Bulbs are usually rated by their power consumption in Watts • Average household lights range in power from 45W to 150W. • Outdoor lights and heating lamps go up to 1200W. • Power is the electric energy consumed and leaves the bulb as heat and light.

  7. Lab Variables • Independent Variable: Bulb Power • Control: No Light • 6 trials • Dependent Variable: Evaporated Volume • Controls: starting temperature, 200ml coffee, same cup

  8. Lab Design

  9. 24 Mar, 2001 Materials and Procedure • Keurig Coffee brewer • 100ml graduated cylinder • desktop lamp • 5 bulbs

  10. Measurementsand Observations • 100ml graduated cylinder • Darker coffee after evaporation • Brighter bulbs did keep coffee warmer

  11. Evaporated Volume

  12. Evaporated Volume

  13. Conclusions • The brighter bulbs did have a greater evaporation rate • Keeping the coffee warmer seems to help more coffee evaporate

  14. To Continue • try this again with just plain water to see if the same results occur • etc.
