  1. University of Nevada, Reno Network Overview

  2. The Core • 10 Gigabit Core • 2 Foundry BigIron Rx units at the core layer • 12 Foundry FESX Units at the distribution layer • Fully redundant topology • Redundant 1 gigabit connections to SCS • Border firewalls between UNR and SCS

  3. Campus Buildings • 91 Buildings connected to core via fiber • Most building have a single 1 gigabit uplink • Critical buildings have multiple 1 gigabit uplinks • Primarily using HP Procurve switches • Foundry/Brocade switches used in VoIP buildings • 1 Building connected via wireless etherbridge • Off campus buildings connected via T1s, DS3s, or Fiber.

  4. Wired Network • Over 1,000 network infrastructure devices managed • All res halls wired • 1 jack per pillow – 10/100 • Wireless in all res halls • Current max bandwidth for all res halls is 100mb

  5. Wireless Network • Aruba Wireless Controllers and APs • 69 campus buildings have some wireless coverage • Most buildings have a/b/g service • Knowledge Center has g/n service • Licensed for 2560 concurrent users • Averaging a peak of over 1,500 concurrent users and growing

  6. Network Management • Intermapper used to monitor status of network. • In-house scripts and systems for device inventory and configuration management.

  7. Phones and VoIP • UNR uses both VoIP and non-VoIP sets • Most campus buildings on campus use digital sets • Off-campus locations are connected to UNR phone system via T1 circuits. • VoIP • Fully deployed in 2 campus buildings. • 2 off-campus buildings connected via T1s • New and renovated buildings will be VoIP • Currently separate network infrastructure

  8. Current Projects • PCI Compliance • Wireless Topology Changes • Bring Davidson Math & Science Center On-line (July 2010) • Bring Center for Molecular Medicine On-line (August 2010) • Merge management of UNSOM network with UNR

  9. Future Projects • Expansion of wireless to completely cover all rooms in the Res Halls • Replace older switches on campus • Looking at other network management systems to supplement intermapper • Border Routers
