Px Ph1 Upgrade - IT, Perugia, 26 Mar 2012 Stato attività e procurement a Catania ------------- Task now: HDI prod for a small (~30 modules) current-type prod Task future: HDI prod for entire L3
Px Ph1 Upgrade - IT, Perugia, 26 Mar 2012 OUTLINE • Procurement of Components for Test Production • Center Setup • Start of Production Activities

Needed Components 4. Signal cable Power cable 3. Power cable 1. HDI 2. TBM
Status of Procurement: HDIs • Critical item: • Certified good spare HDIs do not exist (or so Roland claims) • New prod by same company (Hightech) not possible due to dismission of their original production line • Therefore HDIs are a precious asset. • We have in Catania now 12 HDIs: • 10 given to me by Roland on 01 Feb 2012, ‘recuperable’ (by cleaning) • 2 from a group of 4 given to me by Wolfram during the June 2011 PSI workshop, certainly faulty • 1 shipped to Bari for setup exercises • 1 given to Anna Peisert for setup exercises • Plan: try to convince Roland to give us ~20 more first week of April
Status of Procurement: TBMs • No problem: got 80 • 1 at the June 2011 PSI workshop • 49 from Simon via GianMario on 30 Nov 2011 • 30 fromWolfram on 01 Feb 2012, comingfrom a wafer ‘found’ at PSI
Status of Procurement: Cables • Should be no problem: • Cutoff stretches < ~30cm are plentyfulatPSI • 5 each already in Catania

Assembly & Bonding: Jigs • Top in FIBRAL (eq. HABA) • Built by a commercial company • Quality control done 22 Mar 2012 • Currently at a firm near Rome for anodization • Bottom in PVC • Still under construction in the INFN-CT workshop • in FIBRAL (eq. HABA) • Contrary to earlier thinking, NOT reduced to 5 places, as # HDIs to process doubled, and verified that it still fits in XYZ stage, sideways. • Built by (another) commercial company • Quality control done 22 Mar 2012 • Currently at a firm for anodization
HDI alignment tool • In FIBRAL • Built in 2 copies • Will give one to Bari, as it is needed also there
HDI- & ‘PVC’-handles • in FIBRAL (eq. HABA) • Feature: notch to fold cable(s) underneath in shipping box • Qty. 40 Built by a commercial company • Quality control done 22 Mar 2012 • Currently at a firm near Rome for anodization • in Plexiglass • Feature: notch to fold cable(s) underneath in shipping box • Qty. 40 still under construction in the INFN=CT workshop
Assembly & Test: XYZ Stage • Started to play with it • Solved question about parallel port no longer available on many PCs. • Found a good PC which has it • Waiting for sw upgrade from company: • Windows vs. DOS
HDI test setup: PSI46 + 6 ancillary boards! • PSI46 • in house • Module Interface • HDI-Testboard Adapter • LED-display push-button control box • Relay board • Should be ready in Taiwan • Delivery expected anytime now • Compensation with TIDs • Spring-loaded probe card to probe HDI • Under constrcttion at KU • ETD: mid April. • Compensation with TIDs • Bridge board • Replace with short stretch of cable and pins to be built in house
Handling & Shipping • Shipping Boxes • Qty 5 builtin the INFN-CT & INFN-LNS workshops in Plexiglas: enough for test prod • 15 more (estimated needed for routine prod) on hold pending investigation of ESD-safe material issue • EDS safety issue raised at last Module Prod mtg. • At PSI they think there is no problem as long as box is handled while earthed • Even Alan Honma estimates covering main external surfaces with conductive film is enough • Working with a specialized company (ELBO Services, Parabiago, MI) for possible • Single-piece Construction from mold • Purchase of conductive-in-volume plastic sheets • Modified-atmosphere ‘Food’ sealer • No fondi INV nel 2012 • In contatto con PG per possibileprestitomacchinadavuoto (soltanto) • Probabilmente OK per test prod • Forsepossibileacquistoimmediato con prestitodaaltrogruppo • Ma dovreiessereabbastanzasicurochefondi INV verrannoassegnatinel 2013 [est. 3 – 3.5 k€]
Consumables - 1 • All ordinary consumables and small tools are arrived: • Glue, dispensers, twizers, swabs, kapton tape, etahnol, etc… • Bonding wire (not expired…) still to be borrowed from Alan • Two specialized consumables: • Specific-size pockets from embossed carrier tape • Custom-size Kapton adhesive tabs
Consumables - 2 3000 (min order) from IBZ.ch ~ 1 kCHF ! 300 from CAEN free! Asked Gianni Di Maio 300 more since CT prod share doubled
Px Ph1 Upgrade - IT, Perugia, 26 Mar 2012 OUTLINE • Procurement of Components for Test Production • Center Setup • Start of Production Activities
Cable-to-HDI Assembly - 1 • First operation in HDI prod is soldering of power cable • Second is assembly of signal cable • These need a jig which we have not built and do not plan to build • It is the most complex and expensive • It is not needed for the upgraded detector (single cable ending with card to be glued similarly to TBM) • Wolfram offered to host Catania people at PSI to do these initial two operations on the few HDIS for test prod using their jig, under the initial supervision/traning of SilvanStreuli: • Arranged for 18-19-20 April 2012 • NunzioGiudice and myself • My plan: About one week before, talk to Roland hoping to convince him to allow us to select, directly at PSI, some ~20 more HDIs
Cable-to-HDI Assembly - 2 • We will take to PSI: • The 12 HDIs we have • The 5 cables we have • The 5 shipping boxes built • The 40 HDI handles built (and hopefully 40 ‘PVC’;-handles) • Some consumables • During this visit we should perform these actions: • Cleaning of the HDIs (Roland said some can be recuperated by cleaning – others are electrically faulty, but we will clean them anyways for bonds to stick) • Chemically treating the power cable so that it can be soldered • Assembling of the 2 cables • Packing the assembled pieced in our boxes, then ESD-safe bags and possibly sealing the bags with their food sealer. [I will also be next to Roland during some managerial EVO meetings towards the TDR]
