What’s new with Horizon 2020? • A single programme bringing together three separate programmes/initiatives* • Coupling research to innovation – from research to commercialisation, all forms of innovation • Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and transport • Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries and beyond * The 7th Research Framework Programme (FP7), innovation aspects of Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), EU contribution to the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

Three Core Priorities of Horizon 2020 Excellent science • World class science is the foundation of tomorrow’s technologies, jobs and wellbeing • Europe needs to develop, attract and retain research talent • Researchers need access to the best infrastructures Industrial Leadership • Strategic investments in key technologies • (e.g. advanced manufacturing, micro-electronics) underpin innovation across existing and emerging sectors • Europe needs to attract more private investment in research and innovation • Europe needs more innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to create growth and jobs Societal Challenges • Concerns of citizens and society/EU policy objectives (climate, environment, energy, transport, etc) cannot be achieved without innovation • Breakthrough solutions come from multi-disciplinary collaborations, including social sciences & humanities • Promising solutions need to be tested, demonstrated and scaled up

A focus on SME’s • Integrated approach - around 20% of the total budget for societal challenges and LEITs to go to SMEs • Simplification being a particular benefit to SMEs (e.g. single entry point) • A new SME instrument will be used across all societal challenges as well as for the LEITs • A dedicated activity for research-intensive SMEs in 'Innovation in SMEs' • 'Access to risk finance' will have a strong SME focus (debt and equity facility)

The new dedicated SME instrument facilitated by EEN • Open only to SME’s • Aims to fill gaps in funding for early-stage, high-risk research innovation by SME’s • It will be used across all societal challenges • It targets highly innovative SME’s showing a strong ambition to develop, grow and internationalise • It will encourage SME’s to put forward their most innovative ideas with an EU dimension

What will EEN offer through the SME instrument • Guidance throughout the project • Funding to find out whether your innovative idea can translate to market success • Financial support for the development of your innovative ideas at an early, high-risk stage • Business support and coaching from concept generation to market, on a basis of a business/innovation plan • Support to identify and attract private investors The SME Instrument is the tool to give your business a boost!

Commercialisation Make Application Identify Project • 10 page proposal • €50k Grant (100%) • 10% Success Rate • €1-3million Grant (70%) • 50% Success Rate

How will the SME instrument work ? • Support will be provided through undertaking three different stages covering the whole innovation cycle • A feasibilitystudy will allow for an assessment of the technological and commercial potential of a project (proof of concept) • An innovation project focusing on activities such as demonstration, testing, prototyping, pilot lines, scale-up studies, design, performance verification etc. • The commercialisation phase • In addition, a coaching and mentoring scheme is provided exclusively to beneficiaries of the instrument in order to accelerate the impact from the funding • The service will be provided by specially-recruited business practitioners and will be accessible only through the Enterprise Europe Network
