Good with people Dr. Barrie Kennard. How do we define ‘good’ leadership?. Like beauty, good leadership is hard to explain but you know it when you see it. We are often asked to identify the great leaders from the past. How do we know they were good?.

  2. How do we define ‘good’ leadership?

  3. Like beauty, good leadership is hard to explain but you know it when you see it.

  4. We are often asked to identify the great leaders from the past

  5. How do we know they were good? Would they be equally successful in today’s society?

  6. Surely a better question would be “who was the best leader you ever had?”

  7. In pairs write a list of the reasons for your previous answer.

  8. Is there a common characteristic of good leaders?? GOOD WITH PEOPLE

  9. Managers who are good with people usually also lead teams of people who actually want to work for them Why is this important?

  10. Happy employees are not guaranteed to be effective but… Unhappy employees are always less effective

  11. Statistics show that employees usually don’t leave companies, they leave bosses

  12. Many people say they want consistency from their boss They also say they don’t want to be led by a robot!

Individuals with a preference for Cool Blue energy … Desire to know and understand the world around them Value independence and intellect Maintain a detached and objective standpoint Think things through before committing to action Like information to be accurate and complete before proceeding

  38. Improving Emotional Intelligence Where do you sit? Where do you think your teams sit Take a moment, and write down the colours of your team Do you really know them, do you have a mix?

  40. Improving Emotional Intelligence Observe how you react to people; Do you rush to judgment before you know all of the facts? Do you stereotype?

  41. Improving Emotional Intelligence Look honestly at how you think and interact with other people. Try to put yourself in their place, and be more open and accepting of their perspectives and needs.

  42. Improving Emotional Intelligence Give others a chance to shine – put the focus on them, and don't worry too much about getting praise for yourself.

  43. Improving Emotional Intelligence Work at keeping your emotions under control when things go wrong ( because they frequently will at some level or other).

  44. Improving Emotional Intelligence Take responsibility for your actions. If you hurt someone's feelings, apologize directly – don't ignore what you did or avoid the person.

  45. Improving Emotional Intelligence Examine how your actions will affect others – before you take those actions If your decision will impact others, put yourself in their place.
