A World of Computers • Computers are everywhere; where we work, live, go to school, shop, etc. • Through computers, society has instant access to information from around the globe • As technology continues to advance, computers have become a part of our everyday life (digital natives) • Computer literacy – involves having a current knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses, vital to success in today’s world • We must keep our knowledge up to date!

What is a Computer? • Computer – an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory, that can accept data, process the data according to specified rules, produce results, and store the results for future use • Data – a collection of unprocessed items, which can include text, numbers, images, audio, and video • Information – conveys meaning and is useful to people

The Components of a Computer • Input devices – any hardware component that allows you to enter data and instructions into a computer • Keyboard, mouse, microphone, scanner, Web cam • Output devices – any hardware component that conveys info to one or more people • Printer, monitor, speakers • System unit – case that contains the electronic components of the computer that are used to process data • Storage devices – records and/or retrieves items to and from storage • DVD (storage media), DVD drive (storage device) • Communication devices – a hardware component that enables a computer to send and receive data, instructions, and info to/from 1 or more computers • Modem

  7. Advantages of Using Computers • Speed • Reliability • Consistency • Storage • Communications

  8. Disadvantages of Using Computers • Health risks • Violation of privacy • Public safety • Impact on labor force • Impact on environment

Uses of the Internet • Internet – a worldwide collection of networks that connects millions of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals • More than 1 BILLION people around the world use the Internet daily for a variety of reasons: • Communication • Research • Shop • Bank/invest • Online training • Entertainment (games, books, watching videos, music) • Share info, pictures, videos

How Society Uses Computers • Education (ACCESS, online college degrees) • Finance (Online banking/investing) • Government (E-file taxes) • Health care (Patient records, insurance claims) • Science (Collect, model, & analyze data) • Publishing (Books, music, videos) • Travel (Travelocity, Expedia, Kayak) • Manufacturing (Assembling products)
