  1. THROUGH SPIRITUAL BREATHING HOLINESS TARIKU FUFA6 JANUARY 2019NORTHSIDE COMMUNITY CHURCH HARARE, ZIMBABWE

  2. Objectives of this Sermon: • 1. Understanding the CALLING for holiness • 2. Learning MEANING of holiness; • 3. Learning BENEFITS of holiness; • 4. Learning TYPES of holiness; • 5. PRACTICING holiness through SPIRITUAL BREATHING.

  3. 1. Calling for Holiness • Jesus made us holy through His redemptive works (1 Peter 2:9; Romans 8:29-30). So then, • Why do we talk about personal holiness?

  4. Calling for Holiness • Well, God made us holy positionally (that is, He redeemed us from the power of sin and gave us eternal life, condemning us no more Romans 8:1). • Then, he ordered us to live a life of holiness and work towards Christlikeness.

  5. Calling for Holiness • God wants us to take personal responsibility to stay away from sin and working hard through the grace and power He provides to conform into the image of Jesus, who is spotless and blameless. • We are called into Holiness! 1 Thessalonian 4:7 “For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.”

  6. 2. Meaning of Holiness • It means to be SET APART! • Practicing GODLINESS! • To FREE SELF from Sin! • SANTIFICATION/CONSECRATION! • Living a LIFE OF DIFFERENCE!

  7. Meaning of Holiness • In Leadership – it simply means, INTEGRITY, CREDIBLITY, FAITHFULNESS, HONESTY, TRUSTWORTHINESS, AND CHARACTER. • Billy Graham once said, “When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character (Holiness) is lost, all is lost.”

  8. 3. Benefits of Holiness • To SEE God, you need holiness (Hebrew 12:14) • To be USEFUL and EFFECTIVE in God’s service (2 Timothy 2:20-26). “Integrity and faithfulness are basic to leadership” (Clinton, 1998, p. 154). • To gain FAVOR (Proverbs 3:3-4) • Before God and Before Men

  9. Benefits of Holiness • Earns you Credibility (1 Peter 2:12; Mathew 5:16). • Helps you gain Trust, “The trust others have in us depends on our level of integrity (Holiness). Integrity (Holiness) is essential to trust” (Thrall, McNicol, & McElrath, 1999, p. 83).

  10. Benefits of Holiness • Takes away fear of men/ fear of getting caught (Proverbs 10:9) • People around you GLORIFY God (1 Peter 2:11-12)

  11. 4. Four Types of Holiness • 4.1. Holiness of THOUGHT • 4.2. Holiness of ATTITUDE • 4.3. Holiness of TONGUE • 4.4. Holiness of ACTION

  12. 4.1. Holiness of THOUGHT • Philippians 4:8 • Think what is TRUE! • Think what is Honorable! • Think what is Just! • Think what is Pure! • Think what is Lovely (Leading to Loving Others)!

  13. … THOUGHT • Think what is Commendable! • Think what is Excellent! • Think what is Worthy of Praise! Do you know that we are accountable to God for what we THINK? Proverbs 16:2 “You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives.”

  14. 4.2. Holiness of ATTITUDE • Embrace attitude of RESPECT for All (1 Peter 2:17; Romans 12:10; Ephesians 6:2-3). • Avoid PRETENSE (Proverbs 13:7). • Avoid PRIDE/Haughty Eye (Proverbs 6: 16-19; Proverbs 14:3; Proverbs 18:2). • Avoid ETHNOCENTRISM (Philippians 2:3-5).

  15. … ATTITUDE • Avoid PREJUDICE - (Proverbs 14:21; Proverbs 15:32; Leviticus 17:19). Do you know that we are accountable to God for our attitude? Matthew 5: 22, “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults (say RACA, IDIOT to) his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

  16. 4.3. Holiness of TONGUE • Lying tongue (Proverbs 6: 16-19) • Complaining tongue (Ephesians 4:29; James 5:9) • Critical/judging tongue (Mathew 7:1-5; James 4:11-12) • Cynical tongue (Romans 14:13; Colossians 4:6, 29)

  18. … TONGUE Do you know that we are accountable to God for what we say with tongue? Matthew 12: 36-37 “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

  19. 4.4. Holiness of ACTION • You shall not Murder (Exodus 20:13) • You shall not commit Adultery (Exodus 20:14) • You shall not Steal (Exodus 20:15) • You Shall not Covet (Exodus 20:17) • You shall not shed innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16-19)

  21. 5. Practicing Holiness through Spiritual Breathing • Spiritual Breathing = Confession of Sin + Infilling of the Holy Spirit. • Biological breathing - (1) breath-out CO2 (unclean air), and (2) breath-in O2 (clean air) • We also need to practice spiritual breathing – (1) Confession of sins (breathing-out to God), and (2) being filled by the Holy Spirit (breathing-in God’s forgiveness, power, and love).

  22. … Spiritual Breathing • Confession of Sin (Exhaling) • 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” • Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Inhaling) • Ephesians 4:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” • 1 John 5: 14 -15 “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

  23. Applying in Life • Take a moment to SEARCH your heart in silent prayer! • WRITE DOWN one to five sins (of thought, attitude, tongue or actions) that comes to your mind! • Take some moment to CONFESS before God (1 John 1:9)! • Ask the HOLY SPIRIT to control and empower you (Ephesians 5:18)! • THANK God that He cleansed you and filled you with His power to live a holy life! • REPEAT these processes for the rest of your life - experience Holiness Through Spiritual Breathing!

  24. Conclusion • Remember, you are called to life of holiness, not of sin! • You are called to live holy in your thinking, attitude, words, and action life! • You got to practice SPIRITUAL BREATHING in your life! • As we conclude, I want to live you with 1 Thessalonians 5:23, “May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.”
