Freedom Riders. Dondree Woods Mr. Glasson. The Freedom Fighters were a group who wanted segregation to end. Their group was made up of 6 African Americans and 7 Caucasian people. They rode busses to stand up against segregation beginning on May 4, 1961.

  2. The Freedom Fighters were a group who wanted segregation to end. • Their group was made up of 6 African Americans and 7 Caucasian people. • They rode busses to stand up against segregation beginning on May 4, 1961.

  3. In Birmingham, Alabama, on May 15, 1961, the riders encountered violence.Protestors set one of the buses on fire.

  4. The bus protest The bus drivers refused to drive the bussesbecause of all the violence and all the protests. In result the busses temporarily stopped running.

  5. In Montgomery, Alabama, bus riders were beaten by protestors. They sought refuge in a church basement because of all the violence. Martin Luther King Jr. would later go to the church to speak to the refugees .

  6. President John F. Kennedy put the city of Montgomery under Marshal Law due to violence. They sent in 800 National guardsmen and 500 Marshals They did this because Alabama went back on its word The Marshals escorted the riders to Jackson, Mississippi

  7. The Freedom Riders were arrested, put on trail, and found guilty of trespassing in Jackson, Mississippi. Each were sentenced to 60 days in a maximum security prison.

  8. 1961 = Laws Banning Segregation = Victory for Freedom Riders!
