Temperament • This breed has a lot of contradictions. • They are slow to mature, and act like puppies longer than most other dogs. • They have tons of energy, but still LOVE to take naps • Intelligence is one of their strong points, but they can be stubborn.
Physical Features • They are black, white, and a brownish- rusty color. • They also have a thick, jet-black coat. • They have very big, long legs.
Grooming • Surprisingly, these dogs don’t take a whole lot of grooming. • Their ears do require special care though. • Trimming their nails monthly is suggested.
History • They originated in Switzerland, and were brought there by invading Roman armies. • They were carting dogs. • They are a mix between a mastiff-type dog, and a guard dog. • Brought to U.S.A in 1926
Health • Cancer – claimed the lives of many • Can become overweight very easily. • Joint problems = Hip and elbow dysplasia
Closing • They have became popular because of their unique physical features. • They're history is unique because they walked this earth nearly two millennia ago. • They are wonderful family pets.
Fun Facts • They can pull 10xs their weight, but some can pull more. • A male once pulled 2,500 lbs which is the weight of a car. • They can be used as rescue dogs.
