The Han Dynasty. The Beginning of the Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty started after the death of the leader of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shihuangdi, who was killed in their civil war. It was founded by the peasant leader Liu Bang (known posthumously as Emperor Gaozu) in the year 206 B.C.

The Beginning of the Han Dynasty • The Han Dynasty started after the death of the leader of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shihuangdi, who was killed in their civil war. • It was founded by the peasant leader Liu Bang (known posthumously as Emperor Gaozu) in the year 206 B.C. • The dynasty was divided into two major periods: the Western or Former Han (206 B.C.–9 A.D.) and the Eastern or Later Han (25–220 A.D.). • China was reunited under the rule of the Han dynasty.
History • Liu Bang and Xiang Yu were two peasant leaders that overthrew the Qin Dynasty’s leader, Qin Shihuangdi. • Liu Bang and Xiang Yu then fought against each other, with Liu Bang defeating Xiang Yu to be the first emperor of Han dynasty. • Chang’an became capital during the Han Dynasty after a short national war. • The Han Dynasty lasted for more than 400 years. • This dynasty produced one of the greatest historians this world has ever seen, Sima Qian ,who lived from about 145 to 87 B.C.?
Religion • Taoism is considered to be the main Han dynasty religion. • The emperor worshipped his ancestors through costly burials, and families all throughout China made ritual sacrifices not only to the deities and spirits but also to their ancestors. • Taoism can be characterized its the belief of opposites, such as, “there would be no love without hate.”
Culture • Literature became an integral part of the Han dynasty culture as it flourished greatly during this era mainly because of the invention of paper. • The arts began to gain status during the Eastern Han period when calligraphy and painting were no longer seen as pure letter symbols only. Ceramics was also developed along with the spread of pottery. • Music was also a small part of their culture that was made up of ceremonial chants.
Government • The Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) of ancient China was the second imperial dynasty of China, following the Qin Dynasty(221–206 BC). • The Han dynasty’s imperial government system was patterned after its predecessor, the Qin dynasty. • During the early parts of the Han dynasty government, imperial princes were given the title of kings.
Map and Geography • The location of the Han Dynasty ran through modern day China, parts of Yunnan province, Guangzhou province, North and south Korea, the north of modern Vietnam, and parts of Russia.
Great Accomplishments • Cai Lun(62-121A.D.), who was a eunuch of Dong Han dynasty, invented paper in 105 A.D. • It was during the Han period that contact with the West, through the Silk Road, was first established. • The Han dynasty regained its foothold, despite a decline that occurred during the Qin dynasty, it overlapped over the early Han period.
