Design of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lanthanide and Actinide MaterialsChristopher L. Cahill, The George Washington University,DMR 0348982 Efforts in the Cahill group continue to explore hydrothermal, in situ ligand synthesis as a route to uranyl containing hybrid materials. Briefly, this involves the formation of organic linker molecules or inorganic building units that are not initially present as reactants. As a consequence, synthesis of such materials is not possible starting directly from preformed reactants and in turn leads to novel topologies and structure types. Two examples are shown at right. Top: [(UO2)5(HPO4)3(PO4)F4] (H9C10N2)3 was formed from treatment of PF6- anions that hydrolyzed to form phosphate tetrahedra. Bottom: (UO2)4(HO3PCH2CO2)(O3PCH2CO2)2(H2O)4·3H2O was formed from hydrothermal treatment of triethylphosphonoacetic acid that hydrolyzed to form phosphonoacetic acid.
