Georgia Performance Standards • ELAGSE3L1a: Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences. • ELAGSE5L1a: Explain the function of conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections in general and their function in particular sentences.

  3. Nouns • A noun names a person, place, thing or idea.

  4. Nouns Examples: Persons veterinarian, Dr. LeMieux, friend Places school, Hilton Head Island, Grand Canyon Things pencil, paper, notebook, desk Ideas excitement, anger, joy

  5. Pronouns A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun or another pronoun. Like a noun, a pronoun can refer to a person, place, thing, or idea. Examples: I, we, he, them, and it.

  6. Verbs A verb is a word used to express an action, a condition, or a state of being. The two main types of verbs are action verbs and linking verbs. Both kinds can be accompanied with a helping verb.

  7. Verbs Examples: An action verb tells what its subject does. The action it expresses can be either physical or mental. The students opened their lockers!

  8. Verbs A linking verb links its subject to a word in the predicate. The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb be. Forms of be: be, am is, are, was, were, been, being The students were excited about starting school!

  9. Adjectives An adjective is a word that modifies, or describes, a noun or a pronoun. A heavy rainstorm soaked the campsite.

  10. Adverbs An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Explorers eagerly chase adventure. Some explorers visit amazingly beautiful places. Others quitebravely explore the unknown-space.

  11. Prepositions A preposition is a word that shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence. The cat sleeps on the bed.

  12. Conjunctions A conjunction is a word used to join words or groups of words. Common conjunctions: and, but, or, not Cats are intelligent and playful.

  13. Interjections Interjections are words or phrases used to express emotion. Wow, there’s a monster lizard. It’s so amazing! Awesome!

  14. Review Can you name the 8 parts of speech?

  15. Learning Assessment Prompt 1 • The students will create a sentence for each part of speech and underline the part of speech that is being used in the sentence. Then students will examine their sentences and explain the function of the underlined part of speech for each sentence.
