Head & Neck Cancers can also begin in the salivary glands, thyroid or the paranasal sinuses. Head & Neck cancers may further be classified by the area of head & neck in which they appear. There are two main types of treatment used for Head & Neck Cancer: Local Treatment involving Surgery & Radiation Systemic Treatment involving Chemo & Targeted Therapy Drugs • • Surgical for Head & Neck Cancer Surgery forms the main stay of treatment for early cancers. Locally advanced cancers are usually treated with a combination of surgery & radiotherapy Surgery usually involves removal of tumor along with a margin of normal tissue. This would lead to wide defects with both cosmetic & functional deformity. These defects require reconstruction with a local muscle or myocutaneous flaps or a microvascular free flap. Further surgery for laryngeal cancer might lead to a loss of voice which needs voice restoration with a voice prosthesis.
