REGISTRATION 2014-15 Rising 8th grade Timeline Jan. 17: students hear this presentation Jan. 24: Teacher Recommendation Day (students to bring registration form home) Feb 3: Parent /Teacher conferences Feb. 5: Students return registration form to English teacher Feb. 10-13: Students meet in with counselor to register

  4. PROMOTION POLICY • Must pass all four of the core subjects to be promoted to 8th grade. • Math • Social Studies • Science • English (only 2 may be taken in summer school)

  5. 8TH GRADE SUBJECTS • English (95 minute block ; SOL test) • Math (95 minute block; SOL test) • Civics (95 minute block; one semester; SOL test) • Physical Science (95 minute block; one semester; SOL test) • Electives • Total = 6 classes; 5 classes each semester

Math 8:students learn pre-Algebra skills Algebra 1: (high school credit) PreAP Algebra I: (high school credit) will sign the PreAP Contract PreAP Geometry: (high school credit) for those students already in the Accelerated Math Program who were in PreAP Alg 1 this year, will sign the PreAP contract MATH OPTIONS

  8. English 8 Pre-AP English 8(summer reading required; will sign the PreAP contract) Developmental Reading (elective; based on teacher recommendation) ENGLISH OPTIONS

  10. Physical Science • Physical Science • PreAP Physical Science (will sign PreAP contract; additional project)

  11. PRE-AP COURSES • Teachers will make recommendation for English and math • Parents and students must decide on science and social studies • Parents and students need to consider overall course load • Parent must sign Pre-AP Contract and return with registration form

  12. 8TH GRADE ELECTIVES Students have 1 or 2 periods available for electives FULL-YEAR OPTIONS: World Languages (French, Latin, or Spanish) Technological Systems Band Choir Physical Education 8 Jazz Band: must be in band, letter will come from Mr Elliott, return with registration form

WORLD LANGUAGEOPTIONS • French I • Spanish I • Latin I Notes: • Required for Advanced Studies Diploma (3 yrs of 1 or 2 yrs of 2) • Earns high school credit • Students should expect daily study and practice • “But all of my friends are taking it!” (not a good reason) • May be taught via distance learning

  17. THE REGISTRATION FORM • Teacher recommendations for English and math will be marked on the registration form (Jan. 24) • If Pre-AP recommended, a contract will be attached. If not, ask your teacher. • Must be turned into English teachers by Feb. 5 (with parent’s signature) FEB 5

  18. THE REGISTRATION FORM • Questions about recommendations should be directed to teachers. • Counselors will meet with students individually beginning Feb. 10

  19. PARENT INVOLVEMENT • Parents need to be involved in registration choices • Parents can help students make good choices based on current academic needs, student interest, and future plans • Parents can help students understand the importance of making good choices now rather than “waiting”

  21. SCHEDULE CHANGES Per Roanoke County Policy, only made if: 1. Human or computer error 2. Failure to meet course prerequisite 3. Change in program of studies. (e.g. moving from an advanced class to a regular class) 4. Failure in a previous year under the same teacher. 5. Recommendation of Child Study, IEP, or Eligibility Committee
