  2. Galileo’s Postulate • “An object projected horizontally will reach the ground at the same time as an object dropped vertically in the absence of air resistance.” • The horizontal motion is independent of the vertical motion • Time is the same in both

  3. Terminology • Range- The horizontal displacement of a projectile. (launching and landing at the same height) • Trajectory- The path that a projectile takes. (described as parabolic)

  4. Analysis • Analyze the horizontal and vertical separately HorizontalVertical y =1/2 gt2 +vyo t vx = v0x vy = gt + v0y vy2 = 2gy + v0y2

  5. Example Problem • An airplane wishes to drop a supply package to castaways on a tiny island. If the plane is flying at 120 m/s at an altitude of 750 m. a. How far horizontally in front of the island must the package be dropped? b. What is the velocity of the package at impact?

  6. Example Problem • A cannon is fired horizontally with a known initial height and distance traveled. • How would you determine the initial velocity of the cannon?
