Bone Markings. Bone Markings T = projections F = depressions (except facet). Condyle ( from knuckle ). R ounded articular projections; mandible
E N D
Condyle ( from knuckle) Rounded articular projections; mandible A rounded protuberance at the end of a long bone that gives attachment to tendons and articulates with the adjacent bone (fitting into the socket) thus forming a joint.
Crest Narrow ridge of bone, usually prominent
Epicondyle Raised area on or above a condyle
Facet (as flat surface of a gemstone) Smooth, nearly flat articular surface; as of rib
Fissure Narrow, slit-like opening (inferior orbital)
Foramen Round or oval opening through a bone
Fossa (ditch or trench) Shallow basin-like depression in a bone, often serving as an articular surface; temporal fossa
Groove Furrow; mandible
Head Bony expansion carried on a narrow neck; as of rib
Line Narrow ridge of bone, less prominent than a crest
Meatus (going, passage) Canal-like passageway (external auditory meatus)
Notch Indentation at edge of structure
Process Any bony projection or prominence
Ramus Arm-like branch of bone that is a depression; mandible
Sinus Bone cavity, filled w/air & lined w/mucous membrane
Spine Sharp, slender, often pointed projection
Trochanter Very large, blunt irregularly shaped process (femur only location)
Tubercle Small rounded (wart-like) projection or process; adductor tubercle
Tuberosity Large, rounded projection, may be roughened for muscle attachment (ex: behind last molar)
