Allusion • Definition- A reference to a famous work of literature, art, person or event. • Biblical allusion: definition- a reference in literature or art to the Bible. • Purpose: to enrich the work for the reader by association and give it depth. It is often an appeal from the writer to share an experience with the reader.

  3. Cliche • Definition- An over-used expression which is lifeless and generic from excessive use. • Many terms derived from the Bible have become cliches. You will no doubt recognize many that you have heard or use yourself.

  4. Activity • In pairs, choose six biblical phrases that are listed on the handout (must be six that both of you recognize and understand the meaning of) • Create a short, 1-2 paragraph story incorporating all six of them. It can be about anything and can be dramatic or funny, (but must be appropriate to share with the class!)
