  2. ON 1 AUGUST 2018 On 1 August 2018, Google confirmed via tweet that the Broad Core Algorithm Update would begin to roll out. It took around a week or so before the rollout ended. Now that things have probably settled, we can talk about what SEO professionals should know about the weekend algorithm ranking shift. What is a Core Update? A core update indicates a change to the main search algorithm. It is different from the usual daily Google updates. It is the kind that gets released and announced several times a year. What is Google’s official statement? “This week we released a broad core algorithm update, as we do several times per year. Our guidance about such updates remains the same as in March, as we covered here: https://t.co/uPlEdSLHoX” –  Google SearchLiaison (@searchliaison) 01 August 2018

  3. What is the August 2018 Google Update for? According to Search Engine Journal, Google’s official statement has four main purposes: To confirm that an algorithm update happened To confirm that this is a major update To communicate the change to improve how Google matches results to queries To inform that sites that lost rankings did not lose rankings because of poor quality

  4. What does this mean? It means that Google’ Broad Core Algorithm Update focused on the content. It claims that sites that lost its rankings did not lose it because of poor quality. Instead, it only means that some websites which were undermined before have now been duly recognised. It is a common belief in the SEO industry that Google “targets” and penalises sites with poor quality content only. However, Google’s algorithm aims to do more than that. Improvements or updates are meant to provide users with better answers to their queries. It can also “target” and improve the ranking of sites that have good content. It should be noted that there are around 22 areas in the field of information retrieval research, none of which focuses on targeting poor quality sites. There are two areas that are likely to be a part of Google’s Broad Core Algorithm Update: Understanding user intent Understanding content What can you do? Simple: provide good quality content. One that is better than your competitor.
