  1. You’ve heard this line time and again in different sites: content is king. It always has been, it always will be. Writing high-quality content can be tough. Even though people can learn how to write, knowing what to write can be a challenge. Quick Recall! In a previous post, I have mentioned that one of the best ways to avoid content-related issues that might cause penalties is to create original good quality content. Before anything else, the first thing you need to do is to conduct a content audit. Content auditing is probably the most crucial thing you need to accomplish before doing any kind of step because it organises all the content produced which allows you to asses the needs and determine the feasibility of future projects. This is the first step in keeping crawling and indexing issues with the search engines under control.

  2. The causes of content-related penalties can be grouped into three major categories: quality, duplication, and relevancy.  Search Engine Land lists five ways to avoid duplicate content and indexing issues: (1) Check how many of your pages are indexed in Google -You can use the new version of Google’s Search Console to check what’s already indexed --Too few results: know which pages from sitemap are not showing --Too many results: determine what causes the duplicates and remove it

  3. (2) Optimise indexation elements: sitemaps, robots.txt, and navigation links -Create a comprehensive sitemap -Use breadcrumb navigation -Avoid spider traps -Maintain a function site structure with good internal linking (3) Handle URL parameters Properly implement URL parameters under Google’s recommendations (4) Recognise good and bad filters Know which type of  filters should be indexed and which should not -Good filters (should be indexed): meaningful extension of product categories -Bad filters (shouldn’t be indexed): sorting, layout change that doesn’t affect the content

  4. (5) Use noindex and canonicalization properly Know when to use noindex and when to use canonicalization -Canonicalized: duplicates by faceted navigation, URL parameters, paginated content, multivariate split tests -Noindexed: membership or login pages, shopping cart and thank you pages, internal search results page, narrow product categories, duplicates that cannot be canonicalized
