The GPN Regional Resource Initiative Rick Summerhill Executive Director The Great Plains Network Spring 2002 Internet2 Member Meeting Arlington, VA May 7, 2002
Outline • Problem • History • Initiative • People • Financing • Future
Problem • Difficult to deploy new network features without some hands on experience • Multicast • IPv6 • Difficult to keep up with all the initiatives. Can universities participate in all the initiatives? • Web100 project • End-to-end performance initiative • All the working groups • Etc.
History • Originally focused on connectivity • Participants: ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, AR, MO • Over the past 5 years, changes in the economic picture have driven changes in connectivity • Oklahoma connected directly • North Dakota, South Dakota connected to Minneapolis • Arkansas will connect to OK • Much more concentrated on support issues • Informal support role • More structured approach in case of multicast – Gordon Rogier helped many in our network to develop multicast skills and knowledge • How did it work?
History • Multicast tutorials • Afternoon/Morning sessions • Theory/Engineering approach • Lots of hands on activity • Step by step approach • Lead to the model for the Regional Resource Initiative
Initiative • Areas of concentration. Currently these are • Multicast • IPv6 • H.323 • Optical Networking • Measurement/E2E/Web100 • Wireless • AGN • GPN supports individuals to go to meetings, participate in particular projects, or with actual hardware • Individuals then give tutorials and presentations across the network
Initiative • Hands on approach – roughly half of tutorial is about ideas, half related to configuration, setup, and implementation. • Example: IPv6 • Similar to I2 tutorials, although shorter in duration • Attended by non-I2 participants in GPN • Tutorial at MOREnet last March, 2002 • Tutorial at NDSU in June, 2002
People • People involved • Multicast – Gordon Rogier, Rick Summerhill • IPv6 – Dale Finkelson, Rick Summerhill • H.323 – Tom Brenneman, UMKC • Optical Networking – David Olson, MOREnet • Measurement/E2E/Web100 – Mike Rechtenbaugh, Rick Summerhill • Wireless – Zane Gray, OU • AGN – Marty Hoag, NDSU
Financing • GPN funds the speakers – travel, equipment, etc. • Location funds the speakers when they present a tutorial – travel to site
Future • A reasonable way to maximize the expertise within a region • Try to organize other areas on interest – for example: • Middleware • Potentially non-network activities
