  1. New Market middle School VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION SEPTEMBER 29, 2013 9AM

  2. AGENDA • WELCOME – Ms. Bingman • NUTS AND BOLTS -Ms. Galanis and Ms. Pare’ • WORKROOM/COPIER TRAINING AND TOUR- Ms. Riley

  3. Our Mission • The mission of NMMS community of students, staff and parents is to foster the development of critical thinkers, problem solvers, effective communicators, and life-long learners who are prepared to b e honorable, successful, and contributing members of the ever- changing 21st century.

  4. NMMS is a PBIS school • We teach all students to be S.H.A.R.P. • Safe • Honest • Accountable • Respectful • Prepared

  5. WHY WE NEED YOU • Improve student achievement • Build bridges between school and community • Help teachers and staff • When families are involved in school, children perform better in school • Kids learn by example: when you volunteer, kids are more likely to volunteer when they are older

  6. Nuts and Bolts: How Staff and Volunteers Communicate • Teachers usually leave materials with written instruction in designated areas so you can review them without disrupting instruction. • Write a note for the teacher to summarize what was accomplished or questions you may have for next time. • If items need to be placed in teacher mailboxes, only a staff member can do so. • Email the teacher ASAP if you are unable to volunteer on your day or if you are unable to continue your duty.

  7. Nuts and Bolts: Attendance • Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program • Please call the school so we can notify the teacher if you are unable to volunteer on your scheduled day

  8. Nuts and Bolts: Signing in and Logging in hours • All visitors and volunteers must sign in and wear and identification badge/sticker • Safety is our number one priority! • Please be sure to keep track of your hours and log them into the binder in the front office. Coming soon – electronic version of log book!!!!

  9. Nuts and Bolts: Personal Belongings, Cell Phones, and Dress code • Coats may be kept in the classroom – please check with the teacher for the best place to hang it. • Cell phones should be on vibrate during regular school hours – no cell phones should be out/visible during school hours. Please check with front office, they can assist you with getting an outside line on the school phones. • Dress appropriately for the task. For example, your attire would be different for a field trip than a regular volunteer day at NMMS.

  10. Nuts and Bolts: Mailboxes • If you have a note or other materials for a staff member, please give it to our office staff and they’d be happy to get it to the staff member’s mailbox.

  11. Nuts and Bolts: Staff Lounge • The staff lounge has a fridge, microwave, sink, vending machines and a telephone that you are welcome to use. • Please do not use the lounge as a place to do volunteer work.

  12. Nuts and Bolts: Respecting Instructional Time • When you come in to volunteer, this is not the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. • If you need to meet with a teacher, please set up an appointment that is convenient for both of you. • Please respect the teacher’s planning time.

  13. Nuts and Bolts: Student Discipline & Confidentiality • Student discipline is the responsibility of the NMMS staff. • If a student problem arises, let the teacher know. • What you see & hear at NMMS, stays at NMMS. • FCPS regulation requires all people working with students to respect student privacy, this includes but is not limited to grades/progress, medical issues & disciplinary actions.

  14. Nuts and Bolts: Liability Coverage • You are part of the “duty of care” chain that transfers from parent-bus driver-principal-teacher-volunteer* • As a volunteer, if you exercise good common sense you will generally be acting within an acceptable level of duty of care and therefore, be covered under the Board of Education’s liability insurance • Under Section 6-107 of the MSDE article, volunteers are considered agents of the local board of education for the limited purpose of comprehensive liability insurance and worker’s compensation coverage (while on school property). Volunteers mustinform the school administration immediately of any accident, personal injury or injury of/to a student.

  15. Nuts and Bolts: Field Trips • All chapeones must complete this volunteer presentation, sign the confidentiality agreement, and emergency contact form before attending field trips for the year. • Always remember …..notify the teacher immediately if a difficult situation arises

  16. Nuts and Bolts: Reporting Child Abuse or Neglect • Address your concerns with the teacher and/or school administrator

  17. Nuts and Bolts: Personal Health Concerns • Each volunteer must fill out an emergency contact form to be held (in confidence) in the front office. • NMMSstaffhas been trained to safely assist a child with a bodily fluid situation, allow them to provide care first, don’t put yourself at risk. • However, if you are chaperoning on a field trip and the teacher is not close, protect yourself before rushing to the aid of a child who is bleeding, vomiting etc…(refer to the Blood borne pathogen video) • If you are exposed, wash area thoroughly, notify the NMMS Health Tech, Ms. Jamie Marker & your personal doctor immediately.

  18. Nuts and Bolts:Universal Precautions • In the event of a student injury……….. • Contact the nearest teacher • Contact the office ( ext. 64600) or health room (ext. 64591)

  19. Nuts and Bolts: Safety Drills • Safety for ALL IS A PRIORITY! • Throughout the year numerous safety drills are required to be practiced. If you are here during a drill, you must participate. This could mean exiting the building or moving to another location. Follow the lead of the nearest staff member.

  20. Nuts and Bolts: Thanks and Recognition • You will receive certificates for volunteering • Volunteer recognition will occur towards the end of the year. • Volunteer hours are important with most grants and they will call the school to verify how many volunteers we have and hours that are served. The more we have the better opportunity we have at getting the grant.

  21. THANK YOU! Thank you so much for your willingness to colunteer your time here at NMMS. We appreciate everything you do to promote academic success of our students. “No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted” -Aseop
