I. Portuguese in Africa • Only sailed along the coast of Africa • Never went too far inland II. The Slave Trade • Has been around since ancient times • The word Slave • Comes from the word Slav • Group of people from Southern Russia • European Involvement • Plantations • Large estates • The Trade • Africans rulers would seize captives • Trade them on the coast • Textiles, metalwork, rum, etc
III. Triangle Trade • Triangular Trade • Connected Europe, Africa and the Americas • European manufactured goods went to Africa • Guns • Cloth • Slaves went to the Americas • Cotton, tobacco, sugar and molasses were then sent to Europe to be sold • Between the Early 1500’s and the late 1800’s more than 10 million slaves were traded to the Americas
Middle Passage • The middle portion of the trade route • Africa to America • Slave ships • Conditions of the ships • Cramp • Disease filled • Small • Many died
