  1. So you’ve got to take the MCAT… Rule 1: Don’t freak out Rule 2: Know thyself ~think about who you are, how you study and take tests, consider what will work for you

  2. Private Course • Useful if some of your coursework was a long time ago • Good for giving you a sense of investment, skin in the game, motivation to work hard • Gives you a prearranged time and place alotted for MCAT study (structure!) • Provides huge quantity of study material • Good for confidence ( a crucial ingredient in MCAT success!)

  3. Independent Study • If you’ve done well at standardized tests in the past (don’t forget the MCAT is just another one …) • If you work well independently, feel good about time management • Limited finances • If you have a good study buddy! • If you know the material well~ recently took the classes and just need practice with the format • Private Courses are NOT an insurance policy- paying $2000 doesn’t guarantee you the score you want!

  4. BMC Guided MCAT Prep • 6 x 2 hour sessions- 2 each of Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Biological Sciences • Focus on familiarizing you with format • Test-taking strategy tips • A syllabus with a suggested study schedule using the Examkrackers books • My availability to answer questions, give advice as needed

  5. My MCAT Philosophy • Build a good working knowledge of MCAT topics but not an exhaustive one • Postbacs tend to have the hardest time with physical sciences so focus on studying for that section: MEMORIZE EQUATIONS!!! • Take the test like it’s a Wien exam- use your working knowledge to eliminate incorrect choices or to select from among the most likely ones • GET COMFORTABLE WITH DISCOMFORT- The MCAT is the art of trusting your informed best guess • even a successful exam won’t necessarily “feel” good

  6. Setting your date • This is the last year of the current format ~reasons to believe that it will be a busy testing season • Might be hard to find seats • Pick a date well in advance, take your study seriously, try hard to take the test on the date you’ve signed up for
