  2. The American Revolution gave Americans Independence. The War of 1812 guaranteed that other nations of the world would treat the United States with respect.

Causes • Great Britain & France were taking U.S. ships • Interfering with U.S. trade • U.S. thought that British were arming Native Americans to attack settlers in the NW territory. • U.S. thought that Britain was still interfering with its former colonies • Trade • Taxes • U.S. wanted to take Canada from Britain and Florida from Spain.

  4. Events of the War of 1812 • U.S. unsuccessfully tried to invade Canada many times. • The British captured and burned Washington D.C., and then bombed Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. • Peace treaty was signed in Paris in December 1814, but news didn't arrive fast enough to stop a British attempt to invade New Orleans in January 1815. • Andrew Jackson became a national hero.

  5. Effects • British recognized U.S. boundaries and stayed out of the NW Territory. • U.S. gained national pride from its victories at sea and in New Orleans. • American industry prospered because it made more goods at home when trade stopped with Great Britain.
