  5. Classification of Illicit & Prescription Drugs • Psychoactive (mood-altering) Drugs • 5 major groups • Depressants • Opiate narcotics • Stimulants • Hallucinogens • Marijuana • Designer drugs

  9. Consequences of Stimulant Use • Cocaine and methamphetamine • Crack and ice are highly addictive • Damage dopamine receptors • Short- and long-term health effects • Stroke, respiratory problems, etc. • Poor complexion, tooth loss • *Decongestants - pseudoephedrine

  10. 4. Hallucinogens(Psychedelics) • LSD • PCP (angel dust) • Inhalants (see next slide) • Less-known drugs • “Shrooms” • Peyote cactus buttons

  13. Consequences of Marijuana Use • Physical health effects • CVD, lung cancer, stroke • Impaired cognitive abilities • Deficits in attention, learning, and processing speed • Emotional problems • Panic attacks • Withdrawal symptoms • Irritability, anxiety, sleep difficulties

  14. 6. Designer Drugs • Made in laboratories • Have many of the same properties as the drugs they simulate • Pain relievers • Anesthetics • Amphetamines

  15. Consequences of Drug Use • Increased morbidity/mortality • Reduced productivity • Economic costs (see next slide) • Significant legal problems • Variety of negative health effects

  20. Misuse of Prescription Drugs • Oxycontin -“hillbilly heroin” • Vicodin - the most widely misused prescription narcotic in the U.S. • Ritalin - to improve academic performance • Methadone, Valium, Xanax, Percoset • Accidental misuse
