No Child Left Behind Lauren Latimer Senior Seminar
Current State • March 2010- Obama administration proposed a reform, but Congress has not addressed the problem • March 2011- 80% of the nation’s public schools are “failing” • August 8, 2011- Progressed with plans to provide some states with flexibility to lower standards
Current State • September 13, 2011- Congress approved bill to expand charter schools • First of five bills proposed to reform NCLB • Other four: • Lowering number of federal educational programs • Giving flexibility with federal education dollars • Outlining new teacher effectiveness requirements • Rewriting the law’s school accountability provisions
Obama Administration/Democratic Position • Overhaul entire program • Pass completely new educational reform • Provide teachers with more professional support and resources
Republican Party Position • Supports overall concept • School choice • Measuring teacher effectiveness • Funding based upon “school success” • Disagrees with federal control over school management
Mitt Romney • Supports the concept • Believes reform should be handled on a local level
Ron Paul • Against No Child Left Behind • Wants to restrict the Department of Education’s role in school standards
Herman Cain • Opposes the full enforcement of the act • Supports locally-controlled school standards
