Background -He grew up in New Jersey, and at the age of thirteen he moved to New York. -At the age of sixteen he dropped out of school and began to paint. -Once his paintings began to attract the media he was offered a scholarship to the American Artists school. -At the American Artist school he took an interest in painting with tempera paint on a hard board.

  4. Style Of Work The style of work that he can be listed under is “Expressionist.” "I would describe my work as expressionist. The expressionist point of view is stressing your own feelings about something.” Jacob Lawrence

  5. Unique Characteristics Lawrence Mainly depicted the history and struggles of the African Americans. He liked to paint with tempera paint on a hard board.
