  4. AS/MD - How to Apply • Faculty member requests AS/MD at least one semester prior to intended use • A plan of proposed activities is developed in consultation with School Chair and/or Dean (CoC, Arch, Mgt) • The request is made in writing to the Provost (email or hard copy) with a copy to the ADVANCE Liaison

  5. What to Include in Your Request • Name of Faculty member requesting AS/MD • Name of School and/or College • Reason for request (e.g. childbirth) • Modification of Duties (proposed activities)

  6. What to Include in Your Request - continued • Amount of AS/MD funding requested • When (semester or academic year) the modified activities will take place • Approval of Dean must be noted in request letter if it originates from the School Chair

  7. Request Letter Formats • Faculty member generates letter of request with proposed activities for Chair/Dean’s approval. Once approved, Chair/Dean includes a cover letter (including all other requirements) to Provost with the Faculty letter attached. • Chair/Dean generates AS/MD request letter with all required information.

  8. Guidelines • Modification of duties should not result in additional duties during subsequent semesters • Currently available only to tenured/tenure track faculty • Maximum funding per AS/MD award is 10K. This includes fringe • The lead time for requests may be waived in emergency circumstances

  9. Leave Issues and AS/MD • Official leave is not required when utilizing AS/MD with a 100% appointment • AS/MD duties plans can result in a less than 100% appointment. In some cases, a less than 100% appointment may require an official leave of absence • Faculty Support Services must be consulted for all issues related to official leave. Leave issues are handled separately from AS/MD

  10. NSF Encouraged Criteria • Modified duties should contribute to the promotion and advancement of women • Recipient’s work must represent a discipline within the NSF directorate (physical, life, or social sciences, computing, engineering) • Funding available only to academic tenure-track faculty
