  2. The widely held belief in the mid 1800’s that it was the destiny of the U.S. to expand west across North America to the Pacific Ocean. Manifest Destiny Definition • Expansion was considered part of “God’s plan” • for America’s future. • This belief encouraged American settlers westward, • confident that they were justified in doing whatever • was necessary to spread the “superior” American way • of life.

Imperialism Definition A national policy of extending control over another place directly by territorial takeover and/or indirectly by exerting influence on the politics or economy of other areas. --During the early 20th Century, the US was “imperialistic” in its influence on Hawaii, the Philippines, Cuba, Panama, Puerto Rico & Mexico.
