  2. Welcome to Advanced English Nine! • Your child has been placed in Advanced English because he or she has shown both an interest and an academic talent in this content area. The purpose of this class is to fulfill your child’s interest in the subject while refining and developing his or her skills, as well as preparing him or her for college level academic courses and the advanced placement exams in eleventh and twelfth grade. Advanced English is a rigorous course with many requirements and expectations. As your child’s teachers, we will assume your child is college bound and we will help push your child toward academic success and the fulfillment of the A-G requirements for college entrance.

Reading Selections Essays (Writing = 50% of grade) • First Semester: • Lord of the Flies • To Kill a Mockingbird • Short Story Unit (in 9th anthology/class website) • Second Semester: • Animal Farm • Romeo and Juliet (in 9th anthology) • The Odyssey (in 9th anthology) • Poetry Unit (in 9thanthology/class website) • First Semester: • TKAM literary analysis essay • Creative Writing • Performance- Based Assessments on units 2 and/or 3 • Second Semester: • LotF literary analysis essay • Research/MLA paragraphs and Works Cited • Performance- Based Assessments on units 4 and/or 5

  4. Technology • Remind app: To receive text message announcements and reminders, please download the Remind app (free) and text @a37e8 to 81010. Remind is for parents and students. • Canvas: Canvas is a course management system that supports online learning and teaching. It allows teachers to post grades, information, and assignments online. Students can access Turnitin and EdPuzzle through Canvas. • Turnitin: Turnitin provides instructors with the tools to prevent plagiarism, engage students in the writing process, and provide personalized feedback. • EdPuzzle: A tool for allowing students to watch and engage with videos while the teacher gathers data throughout the lesson. • Infinite Campus: Students and parents can check grades and attendance. • Office365: The whole Office suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.)is available for free to students. • Class webpage: Accessed through EHS’s webpage. Extra handouts from class and class assignments are posted for student use.
