Recording Information in a Table • Today as you work with your group try to organize your information in the form of a table. • This will help you stay more organized and help you to see the relationships in the problems. • For example:Reggie throws away 6 pounds of trash in 4 days. How many pounds of trash does Reggie throw away in 38 days? Days LBS of Trash 4 6 38 x

  3. Writing Ratios • Ratio – a comparison of two quantities, which is often written as a fraction. • Ratios should be written as fractions in simplest form. • From the last example: So one ratio (comparison) we can write is:

  4. Finding Solutions by Creating Equivalent Ratios • Find the missing value in our problem by creating equivalent ratios (comparisons). (19) (19) “What would I have to multiply or divide by in order for 2 to become 38?” or x = 57… So then, x = 3(19) …this means in 38 days Reggie will throw away 57 pounds of trash.

  5. Practice Problem #1 • Brianna reads 6 books in 14 days. At this rate how many books will she read in 63 days? Table: Ratio: Solution: Brianna will read 27 books in 63 days at this rate. (9) (9)

  6. Practice Problem #2 • Carl rides his skateboard 32 miles in 12 hours. At this rate how long will it take Carl to ride his skateboard 18 miles? Table: Ratio: Solution: It will take Carl 6 and ¾ hours to ride his skateboard 18 miles. (2 1/4) (2 1/4) 18/8 = 2 1/4
