Role of Substance Education & Responsibility (SEAR) • Provide substance education and abuse prevention information to UK undergraduate population. • AlcoholEdu • Workshops and presentations by staff and Student Wellness Ambassadors • Residence Life • Athletics • Fraternity and Sororities • Develop and administer educational programming for students who have been found in violation of any institutional substance policies (alcohol, drug, or tobacco). • “Leaders of Character” pilot program • Educational programming on ATOD-related issues to youth in the Lexington community through the Fayette County Public School system.

AlcoholEdu Information • Required for all new students who are: • U.S. citizens • Non-transfer • Younger than 21 years of age • Two-part program that must be completed before arriving to campus. • Previously utilized academic alerts (by Labor Day) and academic holds (by mid-October) • Starting fall 2012, students who fail to complete by Labor Day (students told mid-August) must complete an in-person, eight-hour session on a Saturday morning/afternoon and pay $100.

AlcoholEdu Information • Utilized by over 500 colleges and universities across the U.S. • Institutional benchmarks • Purdue University • University of Iowa • University of Maryland – College Park • University of University of Michigan • SEC • University of Alabama • University of Arkansas • University of Mississippi • Vanderbilt University • University of South Carolina • 2011-2012 • N = 2,779 first-year students meeting this criteria completed both Parts 1 & 2 by the deadline • An additional 831 completed Part 1, but failed to complete Part 2 by the deadline and are not part of the data presented today.

Interest in Student Engagement Students were given an optional student engagement survey, offering a variety of programs offered by the University of Kentucky. • Movie nights: 1499 students • Live music: 1455 • Intramural sports: 1331 • Fitness classes: 1222 • Nothing specific – just a place to hang out: 1134 • Trips to regional sporting events: 1090

  6. AlcoholEdu, Retention, and Academic Success • Of the 272 students who did not return, 21% received AlcoholEdu Academic Alerts. • Of the 520 students that are currently on Academic Probations, 21% received AlcoholEdu Academic Alerts. • The AlcoholEdu Academic Alert may serve as an early warning system for advisors
