  1. Weimar Germany Democracy on Trial

  2. First… • Before we talk about Weimar Germany it is important to know how Germany felt about the Peace agreement that ended the First World War. • There is something personal I will share with you when we finish this section but you have to work hard.

  3. The Treaty of Versailles • Read your section of the document. • If you were a regular German citizen, who had been living under total war conditions for the last 4 years, tell me what you think this section of the document meant. • Remember that primary documents are the “source” of history! You are now intrepreting history.

  5. Power Vacuum • After WWI the Kaiser left Germany to the Netherlands. • He took his family, but left a power vacuum. • There was a peaceful transfer of power to the democratically elected Weimar republic.

  6. Life • German people had been “fooled” by propaganda during the war and did not want to be deceived anymore. • The defeat at the end of WWI was so sudden that people cared little about politics. • What people wanted was law, order, and to keep their possessions.

  7. Politics • One thing that a majority of German people feared was a revolution like the one in Russia. • Some Germans were more willing to participate in the political process and what ended up happening was the radical groups had the most support.

  8. Hyperinflation • Long-term problems left from the war came to the front during the 1920’s and by 1923 hyperinflation had set in.

  9. Money was more valuable as fuel than to purchase fuel.

  10. The Beer Hall Putsch • In November 1923 a young man named Adolf Hitler led an attempt to overthrow local government in Munich. • This was his new party’s first attempt at gaining power.

  11. Stabilization • After the currency was stabilized the Weimar Republic thrived. • This was one of the most open and artistic times in German society.
