  1. Breast Cancer Treatments

  2. Types of Treatment • Surgery • Radiation • Chemotherapy • Hormonal Therapies • Targeted Therapies

  3. Surgery • Two types • Lumpectomy • Removal of only tumor and possible surrounding tissue • Also known as breast-conserving surgery • Mastectomy • Removal of all of the breast tissue • Prophylactic mastectomy

  4. Radiation • Cells are targeted with high levels of radiation • This can be done from outside the body using a linear accelerator or from inside the body using seeds or pellets • This kills mostly cancer cells and some normal cells

  5. Chemotherapy • Uses medicine to target and destroy cancerous cells • Affects the whole body because it passes through the bloodstream • Can be used for both early and advanced-stage cancers

  6. Hormonal Therapy • Two ways of using hormonal therapy • Lower amount of estrogen produced in body • Block action of estrogen on cancerous cells • NOT effective on hormone receptive breast cancers

  7. Targeted Therapies • Treatment that targets specific characteristics of cancer cells • Less likely to harm normal cells than chemotherapy • Should not be used by pregnant women • 5 known target therapies used by doctors • Herceptin, Tykerb, Avastin, Perjeta, and Afinitor
