Symbol Groups. How did each Element get its Name?. Naming Group A. These Elements get their symbol from one or two letters from their Latin , Greek , or German name. Example: Copper (Cuprum) = Cu. Sodium - (Natrium) Potassium - (Kalium) Copper - (Cuprum) Gold - (Aurum)

  2. Naming Group A These Elements get their symbol from one or two letters from their Latin, Greek, or German name. Example: • Copper (Cuprum) = Cu

  3. Sodium - (Natrium) Potassium - (Kalium) Copper - (Cuprum) Gold - (Aurum) Silver - (Argentum) Mercury - (Hydrogyrum) Iron - (Ferrum) Lead - (Plumbum) Tin - (Stannum) Tungsten - (Wolfram) LATIN, GREEK, or GERMAN(Naming Group A)

  4. Naming Group B These Elements get their symbol from the FIRST letter of their English Name. Example: • Sulfur = S

  5. Naming Group C These Elements get their symbol from the FIRSTANDSECOND letters of their English Name. Example: • Aluminum = Al

  6. Naming Group D These Elements get their symbol from the FIRST letter andSOME OTHER letter of their English Name. Example: • Zinc = Zn

  7. - General Symbol Tips When writing a symbol that has only ONE letter - *** That letter should be CAPITALIZED. When writing a symbol that has TWO letters - • The FIRST letter should be UPPER CASE • The SECOND letter should be LOWER Case.
