  1. Background Information a man for all seasons

  2. Prior to Henry VIII’s Coronation • Arthur Tudor was the next in line for the throne, NOT Henry Tudor. • As part of a treaty with Spain, Arthur marries Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella. • Arthur dies four months later, reportedly (according to Catherine) never having consummated the marriage.

  3. Prior to Henry VIII’s Coronation • It was arranged for Catherine to marry to man next in line for the throne, Henry Tudor. • A papal dispensation was obtained prior to this occurring, because according to Leviticus 18:16: • "Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness."

  4. King Henry VIII’s First Marriage • Henry marries Catherine and becomes king. • Henry and Catherine fail to produce a male heir to the throne. • Henry believes this to be because of Leviticus 20:21: • "If a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing...they shall be childless."

  5. The Divorce and Marriage to Anne Boleyn • Henry VIII’s coronation marked the first peaceful transition of power in England in some time. • If he failed to have a male heir, the country could be plunged back into civil war. • This leads Henry to seek an annulment to his first marriage, which is not granted. • Henry splits England from the Catholic Church and declares himself head of the Church of England. • He then divorces Catherine and marries Anne Boleyn.

  6. Sir Thomas More • Sir Thomas More was a well known writer and scholar. • He became lord chancellor just as Henry became determined to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. • More refused to swear an oath that disavowed the pope’s authority; for this he was later arrested and executed.
