  2. 2002 Revision • Not an amendment package this time • New printing of entire AACR2 • Changes incorporated into text • Different fonts for text and examples • Most rules not changed!

  3. Bibliographic resource • An expression or manifestation of a work or an item that forms the basis for bibliographic description. • A bibliographic resource may be tangible or intangible. • FRBR– Work– Expression– Manifestation– Item

Finite and continuing • Finite Resource: • No formal definition; by implication the opposite of “continuing”: • A bibliographic resource issued once or over time with a predetermined conclusion (completedwithin a finite number of parts or iterations). • Includes monographs and finite integrating resources. • Continuing Resource: • A bibliographic resource issued over time with no predetermined conclusion. • Includes serials and ongoing integrating resources.

  6. Integrating resource • New definition in AACR2: “A bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Integrating resources can be finite or continuing …” • Most common: • Updating loose-leafs • Updating electronic resources • We will have separate training for integrating resources

  7. Serial • Serial: • A continuing resource issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually bearing numbering, that has no predetermined conclusion. • Examples include journals, magazines, electronic journals, continuing directories, annual reports, newspapers, and monographic series.

  8. Serial definition • What do we mean by: • Discrete? • Separate parts/issues/articles • Usually? • Unnumbered series or first issue not designated • No predetermined conclusion • No obvious finiteness

  9. Chapter 12 • Name now “Continuing Resources” • Scope expanded: • Serials • Integrating resources • Some finite resources • Reprints of serials • Finite integrating resources • Resources with characteristics of serials… but whose duration is limited

Chapter 12 • Not just for serial catalogers any more! • For monograph catalogers: • Transcribing series statements for monographic series in analytical records (NOT of multi-part items) • Creating bibliographic records for updating loose-leafs • Creating bibliographic records for updating Internet resources • Creating series authority records for monographic series

Resources of limited duration • Resources that exhibit the characteristics of serials, such as successive issues, numbering, and frequency, but whose duration is limited” • Function similarly to serials, content or scope is not predetermined • Coverage of events over time • Unlike multi-part monographs where the scope of the material is fixed • Multi-parts issued in separate volumes- material can’t be contained in a single volume

  12. Limited duration examples • Regular reports of a limited-term project • Annual report of a commission that will exist only for a limited time • Newsletters from a non recurring event • Working papers from a single conference

  13. Transcribing title proper: Introductory words - 1.1B1 • AACR: Do not transcribe words that serve as an introduction and are not intended to be part of the title. • Disney presents Sleeping Beauty • Welcome to NASA quest • Rule applies to all resources

  14. LCRI 1.1B1: Introductory words • Catalogers judgment • Look at other sources • Consider presentation, typography, etc. • Occurs primarily with moving image materials, electronic resources, and popular journals • Doubt? Longer form as 245; shorter form as 246

  16. Transcribing title in 4XX fields in bibliographic record • Rule for title proper of series (1.6B1) refers to 1.1B and to 12.1B • Revised rules that apply: • Rule 1.1B1: introductory words • Rule 12.1.B1: typographical error • Rule 12.1B2: full form vs. initialism

  19. Typographical error • “… Correct obvious typographic errors when transcribing the title proper ..In case of doubt … transcribe the spelling as found.” • Why? Title proper should represent real title of the resource and not a form with typographical error on just one issue of serial or one iteration of an integrating resource.

Full form vs. initialism or acronym: 12.1B2 • When both title in full and initialism or acronym of title are on chief source, … “choose the full form as the title proper.” • Can give initialism or acronym as other title information (12.1E1 and 1.6D1) • LC/PCC practice: do not change records created before Dec. 1, 2002 • Harmonization with ISSN

  25. New sequence of series numbering • No more new records for numbering changes • Reason: ISSN harmonization

  26. New sequence of series numbering & series statements (1.6G1/12.3G1) • Wording such as “new series” present: give what you find in 4XX $v $v new ser., v. 1 • Different system begins again with 1: give what you find in 4XX $v $v no. 1 (former system used “volume”)

LCRI 1.6G1 • LC/PCC practice: In determining if there is a new sequence of numbering not accompanied by wording such as "new series," consult the national authority file for a series authority record for the series. If there is a series authority record for the series and it shows the same publisher and/or issuing body, assume that there is a new sequence of numbering; supply information in the numbering for the series in the bibliographic record and update the series authority record numbering information. If there is a different publisher and/or issuing body and there are no other indications (publisher's listing of earlier volumes in the series, specific statement from publisher, etc.) that the series has a new sequence of numbering, assume that the series is new. Do not change any existing bibliographic and series authority records created before Dec. 1, 2002.

  37. SAR: change in title proper (21.2A) • Rule 21.2A revised: • Major change = new record • Minor change = not a new record • Harmonization with ISBD & ISSN • Some categories of “minor” change moved from LCRI to rule

  38. LCRI 21.2A: LC/PCC practice • Rule applies only to monographic series & other serials • Remember to compare title to title recorded in SAR 1XX, not to title in SAR 4XX • Advance implementation of 21.2A2 category i): also rearrangement of term in title

  39. 21.2A1 = major change • Only difference: in situation of “…a change in a corporate body name given anywhere in the title if it is a different corporate body” = any corporate body, not just issuing body. • Test: change in name requires a new heading?

LCRI 21.2B2, 21.30J1: Multipart item title changes • When cataloging a later part of a multipart item after the creation of the record for the first part, and there has been a change in the title proper, the title proper of the first part is always retained in the title and statement of responsibility area; a note for the later title is made and a title added entry is made for it (LCRI 21.2B2, 21.30J1).
