Importance of density • Density is a physical property • Every substance has a specific density at a given temperature • The density is constant regardless of the amount of the substance • A glass of water has the same density as a swimming pool filled with water. • That is why a graph of mass v. volume is a straight line

  4. Density and Gravity • When placed together substances will arrange themselves based upon density • Substances with higher densities on the bottom • Substances with lower densities on the top • Why HDL is better than LDL

  5. Density column • The liquids do not mix together • The liquids settle out based upon their densities

  6. The density of water • Water is unique substance • Water has a density of 1g/ml • Solid water has a density of .9167g/ml • That is why ice floats • The density of sea water is 1.025g/ml

  7. How things float • The percent of an object that is above water is base upon its density • A block with a density of .6g/ml will have 40% of the block above the water line. • Remember the density of water is 1g/ml • 1g/ml-.6gml = .4
