  1. Steps for Dimensional Analysis Conversions or Ty-Fighters

  2. Why Ty-fighter? Use the force! Because they look like them! Conversion factor set up

  3. Step 1 • How many quarters are in $122? • First write out the problem with the ty-fighter and = sign. • 122 dollars = ? Quarters Conversion factor set up

  4. Step 2 • Put the “old” value of unit(s) on bottom of the Ty-fighter followed by the “new” unit on top. The new one is the unit you are solving for. • 122 dollars = ?Quarters New Old

  5. Step 2 • Put the “old” value of unit(s) on bottom of the Ty-fighter followed by the “new” unit on top. The new one is the unit you are solving for. • 122 dollars = ?Quarters Quarters (New) Dollars (Old)

  6. Step 3 • Cancel out the units so you can see that you should be left with the unit you are looking for. 122 = ?Quarters dollars Quarters New dollars Old

  7. Step 4 Set it equal to 1 • Say this….Oh Ty-fighter. What is bigger your top or your bottom? 122 = ?Quarters dollars Quarters New dollars Old

  8. Step 4 Set it equal to 1 • Say this….Oh Ty-fighter. What is bigger your top or your bottom? The bigger gets #1 in front the other gets the amount. 122 = ?Quarters 4Quarters dollars Old 1 dollars

  9. Step 4 Set it equal to 1 • In other words determine how many small units it takes to build the big unit. 4 quarters = 1 dollar 122 = ?Quarters 4Quarters dollars Old 1 dollars

  10. Step 5 Do the math! • Multiply the all the numbers in the numerators and divide the denominators. 122 = ?Quarters 4Quarters dollars Old 1 dollars

  11. Step 5 Do the math! • So the long hand form of this problem looks like this. = ?Quarters 122 dollars 4Quarters 1 1 dollars

  12. Step 5 Do the math! • Or like this…122 x 4 /1= 488 = ?Quarters 122 dollars 4Quarters 1 1 dollars
