About Northeast State • Comprehensive community college in Northeast Tennessee • Enrollment- 5200 • Established reputation as a leader and innovator • Built upon a culture of continuous improvement and data-driven decision making • Professional, dedicated non-union faculty
Principles of Faculty Evaluation FACULTY EVALUATION should • Result in improved teaching and learning • Comply with policies and laws • Be consistent and objective • Support overall institutional planning and assessment processes • Be a collaborative process between the faculty member and supervisor • Include clearly stated expectations • Rely upon evidence as well as professional judgment
Northeast State’s Evaluation Process • Two evaluation sessions with between the supervisor and the faculty member • A mid-year review in October • Follow-up to previous spring’s recommendations • Develop individual objectives and initial budget requests (due in December) • Other as determined by Academic Council • A performance review in April • Formal Supervisory Evaluation of Faculty • Includes evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness, Service/Outreach, and Scholarship/Creative Activities/Research
A Challenge: Evaluating Teaching Effectiveness • Teaching effectiveness must comprise at least 51% of the annual performance review. • Student evaluation of instruction is a required component of evaluating teaching effectiveness.
Selecting an Instrument for Student Evaluation of Instruction • Reliable, valid results over time • Comparative data • Compatibility with overall evaluation system • Results that would form basis for measurable improvement • Trend data • Flexible administration • Reasonable cost

Supervisory Evaluation of Faculty • Based on a five-point system that corresponds with IDEA • Allows faculty to select the weight for each of the three components • Requires an improvement for any item of a rating of 1 or 2 • Requires that decisions be supported by evidence • Is accompanied by a faculty self-evaluation and faculty evidence
