  1. It’s time to move on… Haggai Pastor Brett Peterson

  2. Background of Haggai • 586 BC – Babylon invaded Judah • 538 BC – Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing Jews to return to Judah • 536 BC – Began rebuilding temple • 534 BC – Rebuilding stopped … • 520 BC – Haggai and Zechariah preached and work resumed • 516 BC – Temple was completed

  3. Ezra gives us a History • Ezr 5:1 When the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them, • Ezr 5:2 then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and the prophets of God were with them supporting them.

  4. Exodus Levit Numb Deut Job Josh Judge Ruth Genesis 1 Samuel Prov Psalms Song Eccles Nehemiah 2 Sam 2 Chron 1 Chron 2 Kings Ezra Esther 1 Kings Zeph Haggai Malachi Isaiah Jeremiah/Lam Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Pre-Exilic Prophets Ezekiel Daniel 930

  6. His name comes from a word (a) which signifies to keep a feast; and, according to Jerom (b), signifies festival or merry; according to Hillerus (c), the feasts of the Lord; and, according to Cocceius (d), my feasts: and the issue of his prophecy answered to his name; by which the people were encouraged to build the temple, whereby the feasts of the Lord were restored and observed; and a particular feast appointed for the dedication of the temple.

  8. Do you ever feel like your forward progress has stopped? The Jews built their own kingdoms/houses but neglected God’s house/kingdom. This message is relevant today! Many churches are neglected! God’s temple is neglected!

  9. Is it our temple or God’s? • 1Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, • 1Co 6:20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

  10. We must grow! • Phi 3:12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. • Phi 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, • Phi 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  11. We must use our gifts! • 1Ti 4:13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. • 1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. • 1Ti 4:15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. • 1Ti 4:16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.

  12. It’s all about His Bride! • Eph 4:11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, • Eph 4:12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; • Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. • Eph 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; • Eph 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, • Eph 4:16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

  13. For God temple (us) and His Church (His Bride)! • (1Co 14:12) So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. • (1Co 14:26) What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.

  14. (2Co 13:10) For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down. • (Eph 4:12) to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, • (Eph 4:29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

  15. 1Pe 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. • 1Pe 4:9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. • 1Pe 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: • 1Pe 4:11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies--in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  16. What’s your gift? • Administration • Hospitality • Teaching • Giving • Encouraging • Singing – worshiping • Sharing

  17. Matt. 25:14-30 • Are you doing what God has called you to do? • Haggai was all about getting God’s people to complete what God told them to do. • You can do it! Press on in Faith! • What is stopping you tonight?

  18. Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, • Heb 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  19. What hinders us and why is this message relevant for us tonight? • Because we have stopped BUILDING … • WHY? • Because we have been discouraged … • Because we have so many other very important things to do … • Because there was too much opposition • Because … well, I don’t know, why?

  20. Who are you tonight? • Mat 13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. • Mat 13:20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, • Mat 13:21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. • Mat 13:22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. • Mat 13:23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

  21. How To Get Moving Again? • Consider your ways … (1:5, 7) • What things are FIRST in your life? 1:4 • Do you feel that you are unproductive or unfruitful? (1:6, 9-11) • Obey the voice of the Lord … (1:12) • The Lord will stir up your Spirit (1:14) • Take courage NOW … (2:4-5) • Do consider FROM THIS DAY ONWARD (2:15, 18)  WHAT??

  22. Haggai 2:19“Yet from this day on … “I will bless you”  Haggai 2:23 “I will take you…” “I will make you …” “For I have chosen you!”

  23. For the new covenant… • 2Ti 2:20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. • 2Ti 2:21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. • 2Ti 2:22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

  24. Tonight, we must rebuild. • Turn to II Chronicles 29

  25. Steps in II Chronicles 29 • 1.Consecrate(dedicate) yourself – your mind • 2.Consecrate the Temple – your body • Carry out the rubbish

  26. Heb 10:16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds," • Heb 10:17 then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." • Heb 10:18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. • Heb 10:19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, • Heb 10:20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, • Heb 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, • Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. • Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. • Heb 10:24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, • Heb 10:25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

  27. Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. • Rom 8:6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. • Rom 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. • Rom 8:8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  28. Rom 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. • Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  29. "For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isaiah 55:10, 11).

  30. -I Thess. 5:16-24 • 16Rejoice always; 17pray without ceasing; 18in everything give thanks; [why?]for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not quench [extinquish]the Spirit; 20do not despise prophetic[divine proclamations] £utterances. 21But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22abstain from every £form of evil. • 23Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify (set you apart for exclusive use) you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring[form it, mold it for His purposes] it to pass.

  31. Let’s build God’s Church! • Act 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. • Act 2:43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. • Act 2:44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. • Act 2:45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. • Act 2:46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, • Act 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
