English Grade 8 Program State Assessment (April 2014) • Reading Comprehension (higher level readings and questions) • Writing in response to reading (usually non-fiction) • Writing Mechanics/Grammar included in writing rubric • Four point rubric (composite score available next summer) • AIS for students who do not reach proficiency NWEA Assessments (fall, winter, spring)

ELA SKILLS • Students will listen, speak, and write for information and understanding. • Students will read and listen for literary response and expression. • Students will listen, speak, and write for critical analysis and evaluation. • Students will listen, speak, read, and write for social interaction. New Common Core Standards place a greater emphasis on incorporating technology into student assessments. There is also a greater emphasis placed on comprehension and interpretation of non-fiction writing.

WHY INTEGRATED STUDIES? • Integrated projects reinforce common standards. • Writing skills are taught across the curriculum. • Literature supports social studies themes and content. • Block schedule provides needed flexibility for optimal program delivery. • Projects can incorporate historical content and literacy skills

HOMEWORK AND GRADING • Students will be penalized five points a day if an assignment is handed in after the due date unless there are extenuating circumstances. • Many written assignments and projects are completed over a week or longer. • Students may email me or check my webpage when they are absent if they want to do work at home.

Thirteen-year-olds are both pushing away from adults and seeking them. They’re excited about new teenage opportunities but hesitate to take risks.
