OBESITY Obesity Facts & Stats • Youth, overweight children and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes) than are other children and adolescents. • A serious health concern for children and adolescents today. Data from two NHANES surveys (1976–1980 and 2003–2004) show that the prevalence of overweight children is increasing: for children aged 2–5 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 13.9%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence increased from 6.5% to 18.8%; and for those aged 12– • 19 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 17.4%. • One study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged 10–15 years were obese adults at age 25 years. Another study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight as children. The latter study also found that if overweight begins before 8 years of age, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.
OBESITY TREND IN U.S. U.S. Obesity Trend 2005 In 1995, obesity prevalence in each of the 50 states was less than 20 percent. In 2000, 28 states had obesity prevalence rates less than 20 percent. In 2005, only 4 states had obesity prevalence rates less than 20 percent, while 17 states had prevalence rates equal to or greater than 25 percent, with 3 of those having prevalence's equal to or greater than 30 percent (Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia).
HEALTHY INITIATIVE Healthy Initiative Guide 2011 – 2012 As part of the Sodexo’s Healthy Initiative, criteria has been established for recipes available in Nutrikids. Criteria are based on a standard for calorie, fat, cholesterol and sodium. Portion size is key. The criteria is based on portion sized identified for that recipe. Remember all foods in moderation can fit into a healthy meal plan. In future months we will go to some other healthy items. Be Smart..Eat Smart..Live Smart recipes
MEAL PATTERN Jackson County Schools Meal Pattern Food Based Menu - Which means the following: At Breakfast a student may select any of the four components offered to be Reimbursable, they may decline one of those 4. Components are Meat/ Meat alternative; Grains/ Bread; Fruit; Milk At Lunch a student may select any of the four components and decline 2 of those 4. The additional component at lunch is vegetables.
