  1. NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES MAYRA MAYA APRIL-27-2011 BIOLOGY CLASS MR. ATUHENE

  2. Coal & Black Gold (Crude oil) • Coal is: Is a solid but brittle. Carbonaceous black sedimentary rock that burns. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and lesser amounts of sulfur and other trace elements. Coal is divided into four Classes: lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite. Of the commonly minable coals, anthracite is the hardest and has the most carbon, giving it a higher heat value. • Black Gold (Crude Oil): In the past, black oil and white oil product term has been used to simply differentiate between products that can give more value than crude or not. So happened that most if not all black colored products have less value that crude, hence the term Black Oil was used to make this differentiation. Black Oil product is simply defined as many refined product that is having less economic value than crude oil per unit (must use equivalent unit) price.

  3. What are they used for? • Coal: is a complex natural resource that is primarily used to fuel power or cement plants, two commodities that are expected to see increases in demand as global populations and per-capita income in developing nations increase. • Black Gold:

  4. What is the effect of the use of these resources on the earth? • Coal: Main uses of coal include usase as a fuel, for electricity production, for Ethanol production. Thus coal is one of the major examples of non renewable resources. • Black Gold: -Black Gold can be used to introduce and reinforce -The following skills and understandings: -Analyzing cause and effect; -Sequencing; -Interpreting graphic information; -Exploring types and uses of natural resources

  5. What is the effect of the use of these resources on organisms? • Coal: Coal is a nonrenewable energy source because it takes millions of years to create. The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the Earth was partly covered with swampy forests. • Black Gold: Coal is a nonrenewable energy source because it takes millions of years to create. The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the Earth was partly covered with swampy forests.

  6. How are they turned into useful energy? • Coal: Coal is a fuel that is found in the ground. It is made of the remains of plants that died millions of years ago. Soil piled up on top of the remains and that weight compacted it into a more dense material, called coal. • Black Gold: Coal is a fuel that is found in the ground.
