  1. Big Data – Day 2 Stream 4

  2. Big Data and the Central Portfolio Management System “Finding the needle in the big-data haystack - the impact of the Central Portfolio Management System (CPMS)” Chris King Programme Manager, NIHR Clinical Research Network

  3. Agenda Landscape Breaking down the haystack The Haystack CPMS Identifying the Needle CPMS supporting Big Data

  4. 1. NIHR CRN Landscape - Background TECHNOLOGY and INFORMATION are now more than ever ingrained in all that is done throughout the world and we must adopt all elements of them or risk falling behind the KNOWLEDGE curve. Clinical Research Network – January 2013 • Approximately 55 different systems currently in place • Around 35 different ways of collating reports • 16 different topic-wide databases • Significant bespoke reporting • Data debate • System based and system led change

  5. 2. The Haystack

  6. 2. The Haystack The Haystack: • Comprises of 55 Systems, 35 reporting methods and 16 Databases • We grow and harvest Data • We bundle it and store it in systems, on desktops and in filling cabinets • We farm it out as reports and presentations in a way that isn’t always easy to manage if you don’t really know what you are looking for.

  7. 3. The Needle

  8. 3. The Needle The Needle is often hard to find in our Haystack It is hidden deep inside our systems, inside the systems and business processes of other users not employed by our organisation Needles do not always contain what the labels claim they do

  9. 3. The Needle But what if the Haystack is made up of nothing but needles?

  10. The Needle No Patient Identifiable Data Held Here Name: Chris King Condition: Arthritis Last appointment: 20XX Symptoms: A lot of pain Treatment: Medication

  11. 4. Breaking Down the Haystack Systems Email Database Where is the Needle I want now? Spread Sheets Reports Charts

  12. 5. CPMS CPMS replaces the Haystack • It is where we will grow and harvest the data of a number of systems and business processes inside one central system • That data will be stored on NIHR CRN Infrastructure, accessible to the Network via role based access control • We won’t have to produce as many reports as the information will now be at the user’s fingertips – structured how they want it presented

  13. 5. CPMS CPMS has been designed to improve how NIHR CRN: • Captures data relating to studies and recruitment activity • Manages data for studies, sites, trusts and our wider Network • Reports on our performance at a local and national level By allowing the user to enter their data in one location

  14. 5. CPMS supporting Big Data Local Portfolio Management Systems Commercial CTMS CCT Research Activity Data StudyRelatedData Study Related Data ISRCTN Number ISRCTN Registration Request and Study Data Research Activity Data Feasibility Tool CSP Module CPMS Study And Site Data Site Activity & Performance Data Initial Study Data Data Form Submissions Study & Organisation Data IRAS Reference Data Service Study RelatedData Activity and Performance Data Other NHS Information Systems Open Data Platform

  15. 5. CPMS supporting Big Data • CPMS consumes data so that it is easy to manage in one single location: • From IRAS, NIHR CSP, RDS • CPMS provides data to Local Portfolio Management System providers to support a cleaner more coherent view of study and organisational reference data • Pulling down study information whilst pushing up recruitment activity • CPMS provides an output of data to the NIHR CRN Open Data Platform • Removing the need for weekly/monthly/annual reporting. Users now control what they want to see

  16. Summary History of Data Quality Issues The Haystack is a thing of the past Is this the right Needle? Easy to access data is a step closer Enter data once CPMS supports NIHR CRN Big Data Vision
