THE HEROD FAMILY. “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem…” (Matt. 2:1). Herod the “Great”. Son of Antipater, who was made ruler of Idumea and Judea by Caesar. He had 15 children by 10 different wives.

Herod the “Great” • Son of Antipater, who was made ruler of Idumea and Judea by Caesar. • He had 15 children by 10 different wives. • Many are mentioned in the Bible. • How do we tell them apart? • Herod comes to be a title for rulers of this family. • “Great” had the children killed. Matt. 2:1-22.

Some of Third Generation • Herod Agrippa I (son of Aristobulus) • Herodias (married her uncle {half-uncle}), Her daughter danced for Herod Antipas, married her great uncle, Philip II • Herod of Chalcis (father of Bernice, Acts 25:13).
