THEPEOPLE’S CHOICE In the p residential election of 1860, Hannibal Hamlin, a Senator from Maine, ran as Lincoln's vice president. On his visit to New York in February 1860, the fifty-one-year-old Lincoln posed for his photograph. He appears tall and confident. The pose became known as Lincoln's “Cooper Union” photograph. Lincoln’s great speech “To this place and the kindness of these people, I owe every thing. Here I have lived a quarter of a century, and have passed from a young to an old man.
