  1. Maryland By Jacob Jayne Lilly Makani

  2. Start of the Colony Lord Baltimore started the colony of Maryland in 1634. He started the colony to protect Catholics like himself. He also smelled profit. Catholics were treated poorly in England.

  3. Jobs and Opportunities In Maryland there were many jobs and opportunities. There were jobs like farming, fishing, lumbering, and more. The best part was Catholics could practice their religion.

  4. Government Colonist had little power in the government. Lord Baltimore made his brother, Leonard Calvert, governor. At first he made the laws and decisions. Then in 1637 he let the colony have a say in things. Most of the time only white men with land could vote. Sooner more and more Non-Catholics came to Maryland. That meant Calvert had to protect Catholic’s rights to serve in the government. Those rights were denied in other colonies.
